Musical Director

Anthony Coupe

Tony took over as Musical Director of Shrewsbury Cantata Choir in 2018.

Tony is a perfect fit for Cantata. Professional, extremely knowledgeable, fun and so energetic.  Rehearsals are never ever boring and in performances Tony lifts us with his dynamic enthusiasm, bringing out our best.

Anthony Coupe is a conductor, composer and singer bringing a wealth of experience to Cantata. Starting out as a chorister at Bristol Cathedral he has been a member of Birmingham Cathedral Choir, Birmingham Oratory, Ex Cathedra and part of the cast for the original staging of ‘Saturday Night’ for Stephen Sondheim. Tony is currently Director of Music at Ellesmere College where he has developed music to the highest standard. He is MD of Ellesmere College Choral Society, has established Ellesmere Sinfonia (a community orchestra) and built on the college’s choral tradition adding a chamber choir and a capella group. In 2018 the college choir were finalists in the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition 2018 and the BBC Young Choir of the Year. They also toured Rome and Sorrento, performing at St Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon and the amphitheatre at Pompeii. Tony has recently returned from a tour featuring performances at Queen’s College, Oxford and St George’s Chapel Windsor.

An Ellesmere College pupil described Tony as ‘very exuberant with great humour and a can-do attitude’ ..... That fits well with Cantata!
